A Fossil Creek Bibliography

by Stephen Monroe and Bruce Hooper

Fossil Creek is a major tributary of the Verde River in central Arizona. All of Fossil Creek's water was diverted through a series of flumes and penstocks to produce electrical power when the Childs-Irving Hydroelectric Project was constructed in the early 1900s. Both plants have operated continuously for nearly 100 years. The Childs-Irving project became due for relicensing in 1992. The relicensing process led to a 1999 decision to decommission the hydroelectric project and to return full flow to Fossil Creek. Decommissioning is currently under review by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. The planned decommissioning of the power plants and restoration of the creek has aroused the interest of many. This bibliography was compiled as an aid to present and future research. The bibliography is a work in progress and will be updated periodically. We welcome contributions of additional references. They can be sent to samonroe@usgs.gov
