2004
Verde Watershed Field School
The Verde Watershed
Research and Education Program at Northern Arizona University was pleased to
offer a 2½-day field school on April 2-4, 2004.
Our intention was to
provide a relatively small group of primary and secondary school educators a
high-quality, low-cost field school that provides watershed, water supply,
and water use information which can be used and applied in the classroom.
This program was
developed in response to the many positive and enthusiastic responses that
we received from our 2002 Verde Watershed Field School participants.
The key players in
the field school consisted of 20-25 educators from throughout the
watershed. The two days were broken up into four sections. There was an
opportunity to learn from several specialists each day to cover interesting
topics:
Woven into the day
were discussions of policy and community issues. We visited key elements
of water and wastewater systems, and identified and discussed some of the
pressing issues within the watershed that young people will come
face-to-face with in their near future.
These topics were
covered by focusing on a sub-watershed of the Verde, including Fossil Creek
and Lower Oak Creek, in order to minimize travel time. Educators had ample
opportunity to share their experience and teaching philosophy during the
Field School.
